Measuring the coefficient of friction

2: What is important when measuring the coefficient of friction?

MC_reibbeiwertmessungAccording to DIN 12195-1 (German Industrial Standard), the coefficient of friction for different combinations of materials in goods transport can also be determined as follows:

“The assumed coefficient of friction µ indicates how quickly a cargo will start sliding when the load surface is being inclined. A simple procedure for determining µ consists of inclining the load surface with its respective cargo and measuring the angle at which the cargo begins to slide.

This value is lowered by factor x 0.925. Five tests have to be carried out under practical and realistic conditions. The highest and lowest result will be disregarded. The accepted friction is the mean value of the three results used. The report must state whether the result is valid for dry and/or wet conditions. Adequate safety precautions must be taken during testing, e.g. blocking measures put at a short distance to the load to stop the cargo falling off the load surface during testing.”
